Squats, the king of exercises. The superior movement. The nectar of life. If there was one exercise that I could do for the rest of my life it would be squats hands down. Here's why:

Olympic Weightlifting Skill Levels Chart
This chart is solid! I really like the Catalyst Athletics website. They focus allot on Olympic Weightlifting, which is awesome. The chart is a great way to see where you stand. It is also very humbling:

I've finally gotten around to posting this a few years after I created it. For years people have been asking me if something like this existed and/or if I would make it. There is a Soviet classification system you can find in Weightlifting Programming: A Winning Coach's Guide and other places, but I've always thought it would be more appropriate to create a classification system based on actual American weightlifting performance and taking into account

There we were.

Jerry, on the ground holding a glute ham raise.
I called time.
As he stood up, he admired the outline of sweat, indicating his hard work.
Jerry stated it proudly and exhausted.

I acknowledge his humor, and concurred. Apparently, in the crossfit world, making a good ol' sweat angel at the end of your WOD is a daily ritual. People even take

Putting a Stop to Injuries in Our Youth Athletes
This is a great article written by a good friend of mine, Coach Richard White. We both worked together at the National Strength and Conditioning Association in Colorado Springs back in 2011.

”I want
parents and coaches to realize the implications of putting a 12- or 13-year-old
through the type of athletic work done by a 25-year-old. Parents and coaches,
though they mean well, need to understand what the long-term effects of overuse
can be.” – Dr. James Andrews, World Renowned Sports Orthopedist
Learn and Relearn

This weekend was the National Strength and Conditioning Association Southeast Regional Conference. Strength coaches, fitness professionals, athletes, personal trainers, you name it they were there. Hosted by Gary Schofield, the NSCA Southeast Regional Coordinator and Head Strength Coach for Greater Atlanta Christian School, who did a great job. It was a great turn out. A ton of people were there, most likely because the speakers were top notch. It was an all day event of lectures dropping knowledge bombs, vendors talking squat racks and supplements, and mingling making connections. To some this may be about as exciting as driving in traffic. To me this was going to Toys R Us at the age of 8. Needless to say, I was pumped.
Here is a list of the lectures I listened to:
Atlanta Falcons Performance Testing by A.J. Neibel, CSCS
Movement Screening for the High School & Collegiate Athlete
by Gary Schofield, Jr. ATC/L, CSCS,*D and Mike Martino, PhD, CSCS, CBRC, CES
The Science of Recover- Getting the Scoop on Sports Nutrition and the Workout Recovery
by Marie Spano, MS, CSCS
Cracking the Neural Code- The Future of Coaching
by Guido Van Ryssegem, MS, ATC/R, CSCS, NBFE, RN and Nick Winkelman, MSc, CSCS,*D, USAW, USATF

The Bear Performance Elite Routine

The Performance Elite line is amazing. There are so many tools available for you to piece together what your body needs. Depending on your goals, of course. My training takes about an hour to an hour in a half of high intensity strength and conditioning. I use Muscle Strength an hour before my training. Mass Impact half an hour before. During, I use Biocharge to keep me going. Afterwards I take either Muscle Gain or Post-Workout Recovery, depending the type of training that day. Before bed I take Nighttime Recovery to enhance muscle growth and support muscle repair. Too easy!

Simple Band Work
An exercise band is a great tool and easy to throw in your gym bag or travel bag. There are so many simple movements you can do with a band. The top 4 simple movements are band pull aparts, X walks, TKE's, and face pulls.
Band Pull Aparts
Pull/pinch your scapulas back toward each other (pack your shoulders). Keep your arms straight, elbows locked. Pull the band apart all the way to your chest. This strengthens your upper back. It helps with posture, and your ability to pull the bar apart when you bench press.
Squattin’
By Dale Clark
Way down this road, in a gym far away
A young man was once heard to say,
“I’ve repped high and I’ve repped low,
No matter what I do, my legs won’t grow.”
He tried leg extensions, leg curls and leg presses, too
Trying to cheat, these sissy workouts he’d do
From the corner of the gym where the big men train,
Through a cloud of chalk in the midst of pain.
Where the big iron rides high and threatens lives,
Where the noise is made with big forty-fives,
A deep voice bellowed as he wrapped up his knees,
A very big man with legs like trees,
Laughing as he snatched another plate from the stack,
Chalking his hands and his monstrous back,
Said, “Boy, stop lying and don’t say you’ve forgotten
Trouble with you is you ain’t been squattin’.”

Deadlifts, The Other Nectar of Life
The Deadlift
One of the most basic straight forward movements in the world of lifting. You see something heavy. So you pick it up. Pretty hard to do that one wrong. It's how you pick it up that matters. I would shy away from using the technique that Peter from Family Guy uses.
